Deduction and induction

Deduction moves from idea to observation, while induction moves from observation to idea. Deduction is idea-first, followed by observations and a conclusion. Induction and deduction are pervasive elements in critical thinking. They are also somewhat misunderstood terms. Arguments based on experience or observation are best expressed inductively, while arguments based on laws or rules are best expressed deductively. Most arguments are mainly inductive. The main difference between inductive and deductive reasoning is that while inductive reasoning begins with an observation, supports it with patterns and then arrives at a hypothesis or theory, deductive reasoning begins with a theory, supports it with observation and eventually arrives at a confirmation.

Deduction and induction

Induction is more exploratory than the narrower deduction. Deductive reasoning, or deduction, is making an inference based on widely accepted facts or premises.

Deduction is erosion-proof. Deductive validity is an all-or-nothing matter; validity does not come in degrees. An argument is totally valid, or it is invalid. Properties of Induction. Induction is ampliative. The conclusion of an inductive argument has content that goes beyond the content of its premises.
